Sprinter van storage is easier than storage in most vans, and the reason is structural rather than dimensional. Mercedes leaves usable threaded points and factory mounting locations along the walls, the roof ribs, and the doors, which means a great deal of a Sprinter build can bolt to the vehicle instead of being fabricated into it. That single fact changes what you should buy, in what order, and how much of it needs to be permanent.

Take two measurements before you buy anything
Sprinter storage advice goes wrong in the same two places every time, and both are avoidable with a tape measure and five minutes.
The first is the door opening rather than the space inside. A hard case, a drawer unit, or a shelf run has to pass through the side door or the rear doors before it can live in the van, and the opening is always narrower than the cargo area it leads to. Builders order to the interior width and discover the problem on the driveway.
The second is loaded height with everything on the roof. A high-roof Sprinter is already close to the ceiling of ordinary parking structures, and a rack plus a box or a fan on top puts it past a number of them. Measure the finished vehicle, not the brochure figure, and write the result where the driver can see it. 144 and 170: the difference is what you do with the middle
The wheelbase difference between a 144 and a 170 does not change the storage strategy so much as it changes how much of it you can have at once. Both use the same zones. The 170 simply has enough length to run a full-height storage wall along one side and still leave a usable living area, while the 144 forces a choice between them.
In practice, most 144 builds put a bed platform across the back with the garage underneath, and treat the walls forward of it as mounting surfaces rather than as cabinet space. Long items go on the roof or along the ceiling, because there is no floor length to spare. A 170 can carry a genuine cabinet run, a longer garage, and interior storage for long items, which is why the extended wheelbase is common in builds that carry bikes, boards, or ladders inside.
The 170 extended and the crew configurations add their own constraints, mostly around where seats and their mounting hardware sit. Any storage plan that ignores factory seat mounting locations will collide with them. Takeaway: pick the zones first and the wheelbase second, and expect a 144 to trade cabinet volume for living space in a way a 170 does not.

Overhead is the space most Sprinter builds waste
The band above the windows and below the roof curve is the least used volume in a high-roof Sprinter. It is out of the way of standing and walking, it sits low enough to reach, and the roof ribs above it give real structure to mount to. Overhead storage for a Sprinter is where clothing, bedding, food, and anything light and bulky belongs.
Two things govern what works there. Depth has to stay modest, because a deep overhead cabinet turns a tall van into a tunnel and puts weight where you least want it. And every overhead unit needs a positive latch, since a cabinet door that opens on a forest road empties itself onto whatever is below, which in a Sprinter is usually the bed or the driver.
The mounting decision is whether the unit attaches to the roof ribs, to the wall uprights, or to both. Attaching to both distributes load better than either alone and is what most well-executed builds do. Takeaway: use the overhead band for light bulk, keep it shallow, and latch every door positively.

The garage under the bed, which is the real storage
The area under a rear bed platform is where most of a Sprinter's cargo actually lives, and it is the zone that rewards planning the most. Its height is set by the bed platform, its width is narrowed by the wheel wells, and its access is through the rear doors unless the platform is high enough to reach from the side.
The wheel well intrusion is the part that surprises people. The usable full-width space is only the section above the wells, and below that the van is effectively two narrower bays with a bridge between them. Builds that plan around that get more usable volume than builds that discover it after buying a drawer unit sized to the widest measurement.
A platform that adjusts in height is worth more than it costs on a 144, because the garage and the sleeping position trade against each other directly. Walls and doors: the surfaces that need no floor space
A Sprinter's walls and rear doors carry more daily-reach gear than most builds ask of them, and they cost nothing in floor area. Everything mounted there rides on the hinges each time the door swings, and hinge limits come from the manufacturer rather than from the panel. Light and frequently used belongs on a door. Water, recovery gear, and tool rolls do not.

The roof, and the number that limits it
A Sprinter roof carries a rack easily and looks like unlimited volume, which is why so much ends up there. The limit is the dynamic roof load, the figure the vehicle is rated to carry in motion, and it is considerably lower than the static figure people sometimes quote from rack marketing. On a tall van it is also the worst place to put mass, because height above the window line works against stability.
Light and bulky belongs up there: chairs, awning parts, sleeping bags, empty containers. Dense gear belongs on the floor between the wheels. A Sprinter feels large enough that weight seems like someone else's problem, and on a fully outfitted build it is usually the first ceiling reached. A bed platform, a cabinet run, water, a rack, and a working set of gear consume a substantial share of capacity before passengers are counted, and the figure that matters is the one on your own door sticker rather than a model-wide number.

Where to start on an empty Sprinter

Then fill the garage with bins sized to its two widths, add overhead for light bulk once you know what is not getting used, and put a rack on last.
