Selection notes

The bed is the decision that constrains every other decision in a van build. It sets your garage height, it determines whether the vehicle can still carry passengers, and it is the one component you will regret quietly every night if you get it wrong. A van bed system is worth more planning than its price suggests. This collection carries fixed platforms, convertible systems, and the sleep surfaces that go on top of them.

Fixed, convertible, or removable

A fixed platform is the most comfortable and the most efficient use of a van's volume, because the space underneath becomes a real garage instead of a compromise. It also permanently costs you that floor area. Convertible systems fold or slide to open the space during the day, which suits vehicles that carry passengers or double as a work van, at the cost of a nightly setup ritual that gets old faster than people expect. Removable platforms come out entirely in an afternoon and turn the van back into a cargo vehicle. Match the choice to how many nights a year you actually sleep in it, not to what looks finished in photographs.

Sleeping crosswise or lengthwise

This is the fitment question that decides the whole layout. Interior width between wall panels on a Sprinter 144 or 170 is enough for most adults to sleep crosswise, which is why crosswise layouts dominate those builds and why they preserve so much length for the rest of the interior. Transit high roof and Promaster builds vary more, and taller sleepers frequently cannot lie crosswise without a flare or a footwell. Measure yourself lying down before you commit, and measure the vehicle at the height the platform will actually sit rather than at the floor, because the walls taper.

Garage height is the other half of the decision

Every inch you raise the platform buys garage clearance and costs sitting headroom on the bed. The practical question is what the tallest thing you own is: bikes with the front wheel off, a folded e-bike, storage bins, or a generator all set different floor-to-platform minimums. Decide the garage first, then set the platform height, then check that you can sit up on the bed without hitting the ceiling. Doing it in the other order is how builds end up with a garage that fits nothing and a bed you cannot sit on.

What matters in the sleep surface

Condensation under a mattress is the most common and least anticipated problem in van sleeping. A mattress laid directly on a solid platform traps moisture from body heat against a cold surface, and mildew follows within weeks in cool climates. Slatted platforms, spacer mesh, or a dedicated air gap layer address this, and it is worth solving at build time rather than after the first winter. Beyond that, thickness matters more in a van than at home because the platform underneath has no give, and foam density matters more than the label on the front. We list manufacturer-published density and thickness figures, since we do not test mattresses ourselves.

Fitment by platform

Sprinter 144 builds usually run crosswise beds to preserve living length, because the shorter wheelbase makes every foot count. Sprinter 170 has room for either orientation, and lengthwise layouts with a full-width garage are common. Transit high roof gains standing height, which allows more freedom in platform height, but the wall taper affects crosswise fit for taller sleepers. Promaster 136 and 159 have the widest usable interior width at floor level, which is why crosswise sleeping works for more people on that platform. Each product lists the platform fitment its manufacturer publishes, and where a bed system is sold as a universal kit we say that plainly rather than implying a vehicle-specific fit.

What we left out

We do not carry residential mattresses cut to van dimensions, platforms without published load ratings, or sleep systems whose manufacturer does not publish the interior dimensions they require. A bed that does not fit is the most expensive return in this category, and vague dimensions are the reason it happens.

Every product is hand-selected from US-based suppliers with verified order tracking.

We publish original descriptions and fitment notes for every item we carry, written for van builders.

If a product does not fit your build, our guides tell you before checkout, not after.
