Cargo van storage comes down to four ways of holding gear in the back of a van: soft bins, drawer systems, cabinets and shelving, and wall or door mounting. The rule that sorts them is simpler than most build guides admit. Structure should match how often the gear list changes, not how much the setup costs. A loadout that changes every weekend wants bins. A loadout that has settled wants drawers. Everything else is a variation on those two answers.

Soft bins and totes: cheapest, most flexible, worst on washboard

Cargo van storage bins are where nearly every build starts, and there is no shame in stopping there. Totes cost little, weigh almost nothing empty, and reconfigure in minutes when the trip changes. They also have the shortest list of ways to go wrong: an unsecured bin is a projectile, and a stack of bins is a stack of projectiles. Anything you keep in totes needs to strap to factory tie-downs or sit inside a frame that does.

The other honest limit is access. Bins stack, and stacking means the thing you want is under two other things. Builders who run bins well tend to keep a single layer with a lid-off row at the doors, which trades cargo capacity for not unloading the van at every stop. Drawer systems: the expensive answer that pays back on access

A drawer system converts the garage zone into something you reach from the rear doors without moving anything. That is the entire value proposition, and for people who camp out of the van regularly it is worth what it costs. The trade is weight and money. A rigid drawer unit adds meaningful mass low in the vehicle before you load a single item into it, and that mass comes out of your payload budget permanently.

Slide rating is the specification that matters, and it is the one most often left vague. Cabinets and shelving: when standing access matters more than floor space

Cargo van storage cabinets and open shelving solve a different problem than drawers. The cost is floor width and a higher center of mass, and the higher mass is the part builders underestimate.

Open shelving is lighter and cheaper but needs a lip or a strap on every level. Racking and trade fit-outs: a different category

Full steel or composite racking is its own world. It is engineered for tradespeople who carry the same inventory every day and need it in the same slot every time, and it is generally installed rather than assembled. What the value tier actually gets you

Slides come first. Cheap drawer slides are rated optimistically or not rated at all, and they bind once the frame flexes under load. Latches come second. A latch that holds in a driveway is not the same as one that holds through a day of corrugations, and the failure is loud and expensive. Anchoring comes third and is the one you control regardless of budget: hardware bolted through factory points and rated tie-downs will outperform a costly unit sitting loose on the floor.

The practical version is that a modest bin setup anchored properly beats an expensive drawer unit that is not, and that spending order should follow the same logic. Takeaway: buy anchoring first, slides second, and finish second to last.

Weight is the constraint nobody plans for

Every storage decision in a cargo area spends payload, and payload is finite in a way that floor space is not. A drawer unit, a set of cabinets, and a full water tank can consume most of a light van's remaining capacity before passengers and gear are counted. Weight distribution matters as well: mass behind the rear axle lightens the front end, and mass above the window line raises the roll center.
