A drawer system is the single most expensive storage decision in a van build, and it is the one people most often get wrong on the first try. The mistake is almost never the drawer itself. It is buying a unit that fits the space on paper, then discovering it does not fit the way the van is actually used: the drawer is two inches too tall to slide a cooler over, or the slides bind on a washboard road, or the whole assembly weighs eighty pounds empty and sits entirely behind the rear axle.

The four ways to put drawers in a van
Nearly every drawer setup you will see is one of four things, and they solve different problems.
Full-width modules under a fixed bed. Two or three drawers spanning the width of the garage, sitting under a permanent bed platform. This is the highest-volume option and the most common in a full-time build. It also permanently commits the garage to drawer height, which is the trade-off most people underestimate.
Half-width galley drawers. A cabinet run along one wall with drawers for the cook kit, utensils, and dry goods. These are shallower, lighter, and sit further forward, which is better for weight distribution. They do not solve the bulky-gear problem at all.
Truck-style drawer boxes. Heavy-duty two-drawer units originally built for pickup beds, dropped into a van garage. They are load-rated, weather-sealed, and genuinely durable. They are also heavy before you load them, and their fixed dimensions rarely match a van floor as neatly as they match a truck bed.
Slide-out trays and gear slides. Not drawers in the conventional sense. A flat platform on heavy slides that pulls the whole load out to the rear door. Better than drawers for one large item like a fridge, a recovery kit, or a dog crate. Worse than drawers for organizing many small things.
If you are not sure which category you want, the honest answer is usually that you want fewer drawers than you think and more open volume than you think.

Slide rating is where the money goes
The difference between a two hundred dollar drawer and an eight hundred dollar drawer is mostly the slides. Three things matter.
Ball bearing versus roller. Roller slides are quieter and cheaper and fine for a galley drawer holding a cook kit. Ball bearing slides handle side load, full extension, and repeated cycling under weight. Anything in the garage carrying real gear should be on ball bearing slides.
Static rating is not driving rating. A published slide rating is a bench number: the load a pair of slides holds, fully extended, sitting still, in a lab. A van on a forest service road applies vertical shock loads that a bench test does not. We treat the published number as a ceiling and plan to load to roughly half of it. Manufacturers who publish a separate dynamic or in-vehicle rating are worth paying attention to, because most do not.
Lock-in and lock-out detents. This matters more in a van than raw capacity. A drawer that does not positively lock closed will open on a hard stop, and a drawer that does not lock open will slam shut on your hand while parked on a slope. Positive detents in both directions are not a luxury feature on a moving vehicle.
Drawer height steals the thing you actually need
Here is the math nobody does before ordering. A fixed bed platform at thirty-four inches over the floor gives you about thirty-two inches of clear garage height once you account for the platform structure. Put a ten-inch drawer module under it and you have twenty-two inches left. That is still enough for most totes and a folded camp chair. Put a fourteen-inch drawer module under it and you have eighteen inches, which stops being enough for a cooler, a wheeled duffel standing up, or a bike with the front wheel off.
Drawer depth and garage headroom come out of the same fixed budget. Every inch you give the drawer, you take from everything above it. Before you choose a height, measure the tallest single item you know you will carry every trip, and protect that dimension first.
The related trap is drawer length. A drawer that extends thirty inches needs thirty inches of clear space behind the van to open. That is fine in a trailhead parking lot and a real problem in a packed campground or a parallel spot on a city street.
Mounting: the floor is not as strong as it looks
A van floor is thin sheet metal with ribs, usually covered by a plywood subfloor. It supports distributed static weight well and concentrated fastener loads poorly. A loaded drawer module under braking applies exactly the second kind of load.
Three approaches work, in rough order of how much they cost you.
Factory floor threads, where the platform provides them, are the cleanest option because the manufacturer engineered them to carry cargo restraint loads. Use them when your layout allows it. L-track bolted through the floor with backing plates underneath spreads load across a wider area and lets you move or remove the module later, which is worth more than it sounds like when your layout changes in year two. Bolting through a plywood subfloor into large fender washers or steel backing plates is the budget approach and it works, provided the backing is genuinely underneath the sheet metal and not just a washer on top of the plywood.
What does not work is screwing a drawer module into plywood alone. The plywood holds fine until the first hard stop, and then the fasteners tear out under fore-aft load rather than vertical load, which is the direction most people forget to design for.
Where the drawer sits on top of a bed platform frame, fasten to the frame members rather than the decking. Decking carries the drawer weight. Frame carries the crash load.
Measure these five things before you buy anything
Write these down and check them against the product page before you order. In that order.
- Interior width at the wheel wells. This is the narrowest point in the garage and it is where a full-width module either fits or does not. Measure between the wells, not between the walls.
- Usable length from the wheel well to the rear door sill. Drawer bodies are often shorter than the slides they ride on. Check both numbers.
- Clear height under the bed platform. Measured from the finished floor to the underside of the platform structure, not to the top of the mattress.
- Rear sill height and approach. A drawer that opens above a high sill is easy to reach. A drawer that opens level with the sill requires you to be inside the van to use it, which defeats most of the point.
- The heaviest and tallest single item you will store. Both numbers. The heavy one sets the slide rating. The tall one sets the drawer height.
Weight, and where the drawers put it
A pair of steel drawers with heavy slides can weigh eighty to a hundred and twenty pounds empty. Load them and a garage drawer module is frequently the single heaviest thing in the build after the house battery and water. All of it sits at or behind the rear axle.
That combination does two things at once. It uses up payload, and it shifts the balance rearward, which affects steering feel and front braking exactly when the van is most loaded. If the result puts you close to the door sticker rating, a lighter aluminum or plywood module is the better decision and it is not a compromise, it is arithmetic.
What belongs in drawers, and what does not
Drawers are the right home for things that are small, heavy, and needed at camp: hand tools, recovery gear, the cook kit, dry goods, and clothing in soft packing cubes. Weight low and organized is the whole benefit.
Drawers are the wrong home for water, which should live in a fixed tank plumbed low and forward. They are also wrong for anything you need while driving, since a drawer under a bed is unreachable from the front seats, and for tall or awkward items that will force you into a deeper drawer than the rest of your gear requires.
Who should skip drawer systems
Weekenders who load the van Friday and unload it Sunday are usually better served by open volume and a set of hard-sided totes. Totes cost a tenth as much, weigh a tenth as much, and come into the house with you.
Anyone whose gear is dominated by one large object should look at a slide-out tray instead. Bikes, a dog crate, skis, and a large cooler all defeat the drawer format.
And if your payload calculation is already tight, drawers are the wrong place to spend the remaining pounds. A hundred pounds of empty steel buys a lot of water, or a lot of margin.

How we select drawer systems
We do not carry everything a supplier offers. A drawer system has to clear all of the following before it goes in the catalog.
- A published slide load rating, with the static and in-vehicle numbers distinguished where the manufacturer provides both.
- Stated fitment by platform and wheelbase, not a generic claim that it fits vans.
- A documented mounting method, including whatever backing hardware the load path actually requires.
- A published empty weight, because a drawer you cannot weigh is a drawer you cannot plan around.
- Positive lock-in and lock-out detents on anything intended for the garage.
- A US-based supplier with verifiable order tracking.
Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we say so on the product page rather than estimating one.

Common questions
How much weight can van storage drawers hold?
The figure that matters is the slide rating the manufacturer publishes, and it needs to be a stated number rather than an impression. Read whether that rating is static or dynamic, because a slide that holds a load in a driveway is not the same as one that holds it through a day of corrugations. We only list drawer systems where the manufacturer publishes a rating, and where no figure exists we say so on the product page.
How tall should a van drawer system be?
Set the garage height first, from the tallest thing you actually carry, and let the drawer height follow. Every inch of drawer height comes out of the space above it, which in most builds is the bed platform. Builders who choose the drawer unit first usually end up with a bed they cannot sit up on, and that is not a problem you can fix later without rebuilding both.
Do van drawers have to be bolted to the floor?
Something has to hold them, and the van floor is thinner than it looks. The systems that survive bolt to factory floor points, to L-track, or to a plywood subfloor tied into factory points. New holes near the frame rails are a rust question in salted climates. An unanchored drawer unit is a heavy object with momentum, and it is the failure mode that damages the rest of the build.
Are drawer systems worth it for a weekend build?
Often not. Drawers earn their cost and their weight once your gear list has stopped changing and you camp out of the van regularly. If the loadout still changes season to season, properly anchored bins do the same job for less money and less mass, and they reconfigure in an afternoon.
