A part that fits a Sprinter and a part that fits your Sprinter are two different claims, and most listings only make the first one. The van has been sold in North America across three generations, in two roof heights and three wheelbase lengths, with and without a factory partition, and with the walls either bare or already panelled by whoever owned it before you. A soft bin does not care about any of that. A wall panel, a rear door organizer, a rack foot and a seat rail bracket care about all of it, and the second group is where the money goes.
This guide is about the checking rather than the choosing. What the four fitment variables are, where the aftermarket draws its generation line and why, when a generation label is doing real work and when it is a filter you can safely look past, which variable quietly voids a purchase and which one barely matters, and the order to run the checks in so that a bad fit gets caught in the browser instead of on the driveway. A part fits four things, and the listing usually names two
Fitment on this platform comes down to four variables. Generation, which is the model year band the part was designed around. Roof height, standard or high. Wheelbase, 144 or 170 or the extended 170. And the state of the interior you are fitting it to, which covers whether the walls are bare metal or already panelled, whether there is a factory partition behind the seats, and whether the van left the factory as a cargo van or as a passenger or crew van with seat mounting hardware still in the floor.
A good listing names the first two. A careful one names the third when it matters. Almost none of them name the fourth, and they are not being evasive by leaving it out. The seller cannot know what is already bolted to your walls. That produces a specific and repeatable failure: the variable most likely to break the purchase is the one nobody writes down, so the buyer checks the three that are printed, feels thorough, and discovers the fourth with the part in one hand.
The practical response is to read a listing twice. Once for what it says, which is the easy pass, and once for what it has not said. If a wall-mounted part names a generation and a roof height but says nothing about panelling, it is describing a fit to bare metal, and the depth of your existing panel is now your problem to measure rather than the maker's problem to accommodate. The line the aftermarket draws at 2019
Three generations of Sprinter have been sold in North America. The first, known as the T1N, ran from roughly 2001 to 2007 and wore Dodge and Freightliner badges for most of that time. The second, the NCV3 or W906, covers model years 2007 through 2018. The third, the VS30 or W907, starts at 2019 and is what a new van is today. Both of the recent two came in 144 and 170 wheelbases and in standard and high roofs, so the generation split is not a size split.
The aftermarket has settled on that 2019 boundary with unusual consistency. Product titles read as VS30 for 2019 and newer, or as NCV3 for 2007 through 2018, and vendors who specialise in the platform organise whole catalogue sections that way. When an entire industry agrees on where to cut, the cut is usually real, and the useful thing for a buyer is that it makes the first filter fast: establish which side of 2019 your van sits on and most of the catalogue disqualifies itself before you have read a single specification.
Establishing that is where people go wrong, because the obvious source is the wrong one. The certification label in the driver door jamb carries a build date, and a build date is not a model year. A van manufactured in September of one calendar year is very often the next year's model. The number that governs every fitment listing is the model year, and it lives in the tenth character of the vehicle identification number and on the title or registration document. Takeaway: settle the model year from the VIN or the title rather than from the build date on the door label, because those two disagree for every van built late in a calendar year.
A generation label is a filter, not a verdict
Having drawn that line, the next thing to understand is that plenty of parts cross it. One well-known outfitter sells upper rear door panels for the high roof Sprinter described as fitting all 2007 to present vans, which is to say the whole of the NCV3 run and the whole of the VS30 run on one part number. Other parts from the same category, middle and lower rear door panels among them, are sold strictly as VS30 for 2019 and newer. Same door, same van, different answer, because what changed between the generations changed in some places and not others.
So a generation label is evidence about the part rather than a verdict on the van. It tells you what the maker designed and checked, not what the sheet metal will physically accept. Two things follow from that. The first is that ruling out a part because it names the other generation is a mistake worth avoiding, since the honest question is which surface it mounts to and whether that surface moved. The second is more counterintuitive: a listing that names no generation at all deserves more suspicion than one that names the wrong one. The listing naming the other generation has told you something specific that you can go and check. The listing naming none has told you nothing, and silence on a platform this variable is not a claim of universal fit.
Takeaway: treat the generation label as evidence about the part rather than a ruling on the van, and be warier of the listing that names no generation than of one that names the other.
Wheelbase is the variable that matters least here
Wheelbase gets more attention in a fitment conversation than it earns, at least in this category. Going from a 144 to a 170 adds floor length and rear overhang. It does not change the interior width, it does not change the roof height, and it does not change the shape of the doors. Almost nothing in the boxes and accessories category depends on any of the things wheelbase actually alters.
The parts that genuinely care are the ones that run along the length of the van. Bed platforms, long drawer runs, track fitted horizontally down a wall, and anything whose instructions reference rib positions counted from the rear. For those, the wheelbase is a hard gate. For a stack of cases, a door organizer, a MOLLE panel or a set of bins, it is irrelevant, and a product page offering a 144 version and a 170 version of a soft bin set is describing a quantity, not a different design.
The purchase that goes wrong here is not the one people brace for. It is rarely someone fitting a 144 part into a 170 van and coming up short. It is far more often someone with a 170 who assumes a wheelbase-specific version must exist, does not find one, and concludes the part is unavailable for their van when it fits perfectly well. Roof height is the one that quietly voids a purchase
Roof height is the opposite case. It is checked less often and it invalidates more purchases. A 144 high roof gives roughly seventy nine inches of interior standing height and roughly seventy inches of width between the walls, and the standard roof takes about a foot out of the first of those numbers while leaving the second alone. Everything below waist height is unaffected. Everything in the top band of the van is decided by it.
That top band is where the roof-specific parts live. Upper wall panels are cut for a specific roof. Upper rear door panels are sold explicitly as a high roof item, because the door itself is a different height. Overhead shelving, the top row of a MOLLE panel run, and any tall stack that has to clear a bed platform all resolve differently depending on which roof you have. The convention that catches people is a formatting habit rather than a deception. High roof gets named in a title because it is the version most conversion buyers want. Standard roof is often left unnamed, which a fast reader parses as fits all rather than as unstated. Takeaway: assume any part mounting above shoulder height is roof-height specific whether the listing says so or not, and confirm it before ordering rather than after.
What the word accessories is actually covering
Search for Sprinter storage accessories and the results collapse three unrelated purchases into one list. The first group attaches to the structure of the van: wall panels, door organizers, MOLLE panels, track, and the brackets that hold any of them. The second group sits loose inside and touches only the floor or a shelf: cases, bins, soft storage, and the containers our boxes and bins guide covers by category. The third group is the hardware that joins the first two together, which is straps, fittings, threaded inserts and the small parts our van storage organizers guide works through.
Fitment risk is concentrated almost entirely in the first group. A hard case does not have a generation. A wall panel does. Yet the checking effort tends to land the other way round, because containers are the part of the purchase people can picture, so they get measured carefully while the panel gets bought on a photograph. Reversing that allocation is close to free and removes most of the returns from this category.
It also changes what a good product page looks like to you. For the loose group, dimensions and materials are the whole specification. For the attached group, dimensions are secondary and the mounting description is the specification. Parts that use the holes already in the van
The best-behaved parts in this whole category are the ones that mount to something the factory already put there. Those upper door panels attach with automotive push pins and need no tools at all. Other parts pick up existing threaded holes in the wall ribs, or the seat rail in the floor of a van that started life carrying people. Attachment points like these are also the reason a part sometimes spans two generations: the sheet metal around them can change quite a lot while the holes themselves stay put.
Drilling is a different decision with different consequences, and it is worth taking deliberately rather than by default. A new hole in an exterior-facing panel is a corrosion path that has to be sealed and stays a maintenance item. A hole in a structural rib needs to miss things you cannot see. And every hole makes the build harder to reverse, which matters more than people expect, because storage layouts change once the van has been lived in for a season. For a leased van, a van you expect to resell, or a first build you are not yet confident in, a no-drill mounting method is worth paying a premium for. For a permanent trade fit-out that will outlive three sets of contents, it usually is not. Takeaway: prefer the part that uses a hole the factory already made, because it survives both a generation change and a change of mind.

The order to run the checks in
Fitment checking is faster when the cheapest checks come first, because each one eliminates listings the later checks then never have to look at. Start with the model year, from the VIN or the title, which takes a minute once and never has to be done again. Convert it to a generation, which is a single comparison against 2019. Those two together disqualify most of a catalogue.
Then check roof height, but only for parts that mount above shoulder height, and wheelbase, but only for parts that run along the length of the van. Applying either of those to everything is where the process turns tedious and gets abandoned. Fourth, read the listing for what it has not named and decide whether the silence is benign. On a loose container it always is. On something that bolts to a wall it rarely is.
Last, check the van itself rather than the listing, which is the step people skip because it requires walking outside. What is already on the wall, how thick it is, and whether there is a partition or a seat rail in the way.
