Van storage systems get chosen backward. Most builders start by picking a drawer unit they liked in a photo, then spend the next two seasons working around it. The better order is to decide what has to be reachable, decide where weight is allowed to sit, and only then choose hardware. This collection carries the systems that survive that process: garage drawers, rear door organizers, wall shelving, and soft storage for the spaces rigid boxes waste.

Start with reach, not capacity

Capacity is the number every product page leads with, and it is the least useful one. A van has more cubic feet than most builders fill; what runs out is accessible cubic feet. Sort your gear into what you touch daily, weekly, and twice a season, then assign zones in that order. Daily items belong at the slider door at standing height. Weekly items go in the garage. Twice-a-season gear can live anywhere that is annoying to reach, and that includes the roof. Builders who skip this step end up with a full van and nothing findable, which is the actual failure mode.

Weight placement decides how the van drives

Every pound above the window line raises the center of gravity and shows up as body roll in crosswinds and on off-camber dirt. Heavy items belong low and, where possible, ahead of the rear axle. This is why the garage zone under a fixed bed is worth building well even though it is the hardest space to reach: it is the only place in the vehicle where 150 pounds of tools and water does no handling harm. Check the payload rating on your door sticker before you commit to a system, not after. Published payload varies by trim and build sheet, and the sticker on your specific vehicle is the only number that counts.

Fixed drawers, modular bins, or soft storage

Fixed drawer systems use space best and hold the most weight per cubic foot, but they are semi-permanent and they cost the most. They earn their place in full-time builds and in vehicles that never need to revert to cargo duty. Modular bin systems on L-track or unistrut give up some density in exchange for reconfiguring in an afternoon; for weekend builds and vehicles that double as work vans, this is usually the correct answer. Soft storage fills the spaces the other two waste: door pockets, wheel well curves, the gap above a fixed bed. Most working builds use all three, and the mistake is committing an entire vehicle to one approach because it photographs well.

What to check before you buy

Load rating is the first spec, and it needs to be a published figure rather than an impression. A drawer rated for 200 pounds static is not rated for 200 pounds over washboard. Second is mounting method: systems that bolt to factory floor points or to L-track are recoverable, and systems that require new holes in the floor are not. Floor penetrations near the frame rails are also a rust question in salted climates. Third is slide quality on anything that opens, because drawer slides are the first component to fail in a vehicle that vibrates for a living. Fourth is the width figure, since interior width between wheel wells differs enough between platforms that a unit built for one will not drop into another.

Fitment by platform

Sprinter 144 builds trade garage depth for maneuverability, so rear door storage and vertical wall systems carry more of the load. Sprinter 170 builds have the length for a full-width garage with drawers, which is why most fixed systems are dimensioned for that platform first. Transit high roof gains standing height and gives up some floor-to-ceiling wall real estate to the roof curve, which matters for tall shelving. Promaster 136 and 159 have the squarest interior walls of the three, so flat-panel and shelving systems fit with less shimming. Every product here carries the platform fitment its manufacturer publishes, and where a manufacturer does not publish a fitment we say so rather than guessing.

What we left out

We do not carry consumer-grade plastic bin towers, unrated shelving sold for garages rather than vehicles, or any system whose manufacturer will not publish a load rating. We also skipped several storage lines built for tradesman van racking rather than adventure builds; they are good products for a different job. If a category here looks thin, it is because the alternatives did not have published specs we could stand behind.
