Selection notes

A van molle panel turns a flat wall or a door into usable storage without cabinetry. That is the whole appeal: it is the lightest, least expensive, and most reversible way to make vertical surfaces carry gear. It is also the layer most likely to be over-bought, because the panel is cheap and the pouches are not, and an entire wall of molle filled with heavy pouches puts weight exactly where you least want it.

What molle is good at

Molle earns its place for light, frequently grabbed items in the daily-reach layer: headlamps, gloves, first aid, a rain shell, tools you want visible rather than buried. It is genuinely good on the rear door and the slider door, which are otherwise dead surfaces, and on the wall above a bed platform where a cabinet would eat headroom. It is poor at anything heavy, anything you want dust-free, and anything that rattles. If a pouch needs to be strapped down to stop noise, it belongs in a drawer instead.

Panel material and the weight tradeoff

Aluminum panels are the common choice: light, corrosion-resistant, and stiff enough to spread load across multiple mounting points. Steel holds more and weighs considerably more, which is usually the wrong trade on a wall. Composite and plastic panels are the lightest and the most limited in load. Look for the manufacturer's published panel load rating and, just as important, the mounting hardware specification, because most molle panel failures are the fasteners letting go of thin sheet metal rather than the panel itself bending.

Mounting to a van wall without regret

Van walls are thin sheet steel with structural ribs behind them, and the ribs are where fasteners belong. Mounting into unsupported sheet metal works until the vehicle hits a washboard road, then the fastener elongates its hole and the panel starts moving. Well-designed panels either bolt to factory threaded points, mount to L-track, or come with a backing plate that spreads load. Rivnuts into ribs are the common aftermarket solution and are fine when placed correctly. Whatever the method, every penetration into an exterior-facing panel needs sealing, and penetrations near window frames and roof seams should be avoided entirely.

Standards, spacing, and compatibility

Molle webbing follows a defined spacing standard, and panels cut to that spacing accept standard pouches. Panels that use a proprietary hole pattern lock you into one brand's accessories, which is worth knowing before rather than after. Hole-pattern boards accept a different accessory ecosystem than woven webbing and are usually the better choice where you want rigid mounts instead of fabric pouches. Neither is wrong. Mixing them across a build without planning is how you end up with accessories that fit nothing.

Fitment by platform

Promaster 136 and 159 have the flattest and squarest interior walls of the three platforms, which is why flat panels fit there with the least shimming. Sprinter 144 and 170 walls have more curvature and pronounced ribs, so panels are typically platform-specific and cut around the ribs. Transit high roof has the most roof curvature, which limits how high a flat panel can run before it needs a bend. Rear door panels are the most platform-specific item in this collection, since door pressings differ substantially between manufacturers and between model years. Each product lists the platform and, where relevant, the model years its manufacturer publishes.

What we left out

We do not carry panels sold without a published load rating or without vehicle-specific mounting hardware, and we skipped universal panels that expect the buyer to work out their own fastening into sheet metal. We also excluded tactical-branded pouches that carry a premium for appearance rather than construction. The mounting hardware is the part that fails, and a panel sold without it is an incomplete product.
