Condensation under a mattress is the most common and least anticipated problem in van sleeping. A mattress laid directly on a solid platform traps moisture from body heat against a cold surface, and mildew follows within weeks in cool climates. Slatted platforms, spacer mesh, or a dedicated air gap layer address this, and it is worth solving at build time rather than after the first winter. Beyond that, thickness matters more in a van than at home because the platform underneath has no give, and foam density matters more than the label on the front. We list manufacturer-published density and thickness figures, since we do not test mattresses ourselves.
